National award on the cards for Teignbridge Council

Teignbridge Council has been shortlisted for a prestigious LGC Award for its pioneering work in self build

3 November 2016

Teignbridge Council has been shortlisted in the 'Innovation' category of the prestigious LGC (Local Government Chronicle) Awards. Commenting on award nomination, Teignbridge District Council Leader, Cllr Jeremy Christophers said: "We are truly delighted to be shortlisted for 'Innovation' by leading the way in the self build revolution. It's a real tribute to the hard work of staff and leading councillors in fulfilling our desire to help people design and build their own dream homes in the communities they grew up in, keeping vital links with family and friends.”

Delivering on its promise to help people design and build their own dream home, Teignbridge became the first council to adopt a policy on self build homes, known as the Custom and Self Build Supplementary Planning Document (SPD). "Through its innovative Local Plan policy, Teignbridge was the first council in England to require developers of larger sites to provide 5% of homes as serviced custom build plots, known as the 'Teignbridge Rule,’” explains Christophers. ”Through our ground-breaking work we are helping to move custom build from the periphery to the centre of solving the nation's housing crisis."

The nomination on the shortlist is the latest in a string of accolades for Teignbridge, who were crowned the 'Best Council for Self/Custom Build' at 2016’s Build It awards. In addition to the accolades, the council’s work has been recognised by the government as representatives were recently invited to take part in the National Housing Taskforce inquiry, which aims to help unlock the building potential of small, community-led and self build projects.
