Help people self or custom build to counter housing crisis, says trade body

21 May 2015

Opportunities must be provided for people to build their own homes, to help cure the UK's housing plight, a trade body has announced.

Opening the Building Societies Association (BSA) Conference in Harrogate yesterday, Chief Executive Robin Fieth called on the new Government to provide opportunities for individuals interested in self or custom build; an essential element of what he branded "a wider long term strategy to counter the housing crisis".

Great sentiments however Banks and Building societies are far from helpful towards self builders mortgage needs. To self build you have previously sold a house you have bought and paid for. Taken a year or more out of your career. Supported your family. Manages and overcome the miriad of problems and expenses involved with a self build project only to be told that you do not have the right level of income over the past 3years to enable them to give you a mortgage which amounts to less than 50/ 75% of the value of the finished property. As a result we are locked in to high interest rates of bridging loans and temporary finance packages. If we can pay 14% interest on bridging loans HOW can we be a 'risk' at 5% ???
