Self build Bill set to become law

11 March 2015

A government bill to help enable more people to build their own homes has completed the final stage of its journey through parliament and will now go for Royal Assent and become law.

Great news to see the bill will become law. I presume though this is only in England. I am based up in Scotland and trying to find a plot up here is impossible unless you are one of the big land grabbing building companies.

Councils north of the border should be made to give planning consent for self builders on the greenbelt sites as the green areas around present urbanised areas are always in the hands of the large developers already and there is no way they will give up their land.

I know a number of small bungalows and farmers willing to sell land but each time my local authority planning department says there is no way I am allowed to build, meanwhile the local greenfields have been rezoned as housing developments and literally thousands of houses have been built on them.

I suppose this is a step in the right direction.

Good news, we have only just found our building plot after 15years of looking. Somerset/dorset and Devon need more chances for self builders please.

fantastic, just what the market and self builders need, finding plots in my area is particularly hard, hopefully this will lead to a softening of the council stance on new self builds on green field sites
